Utah Christmas Tree Permits

2024 Season

Each year, thousands of people find their Christmas trees on public lands. The harvest of these resources not only provides memorable recreation opportunities but maintains the natural health of our forested lands.

Permits are required for cutting trees and carry a fee. We encourage the public to purchase permits online at the forest products permit website beginning on the following dates:

  • St. George Field Office—November 12 - December 24

  • Price Field Office—November 12 - December 24

  • All other Field Offices—November 12 - December 24

In-person sales are available during regular business hours, excluding federal holidays. For more information, including rules on cuttings, visit www.blm.gov/utah/tree-permits. Find the appropriate field office using the BLM Utah’s administrative boundary map

Check Your Map Before Heading Out

Before heading out to cut down your tree, view our new Web App! Then go below to download maps on your phone for easy access offline.

App Store

Google Play

Scroll down to download your district's map to your phone or tablet. This will allow you to navigate to potential harvest locations even without cell service. After you click on the download link it will ask you to install ArcGIS Field Maps. When complete, skip “sign in” and then search for "XMAS Tree Cutting Areas." Look for the map that represents your area and download. Then open the thumbnail and look for red cutting areas

Each district determines its own fee structure, number of permits, and species allowed for harvest. Learn more about holiday tree permit fees, number of permits allowed, maps and other helpful resources for your local BLM office.

Safety Tips

BLM Utah would like to remind visitors to please be respectful and follow guidelines to ensure this tradition continues for future generations.

  • Stay on designated roads and respect private land. Some tree cutting areas may be inaccessible after snowfall – early season cutting is advisable.
  • Be prepared! Tree-cutters traveling through Utah’s public lands should be prepared for poor road conditions or inclement weather. Make sure you have everything you need for an outdoor venture including warm clothes, food, water, and safety equipment.
  • Let someone know where you’ll be going and when you plan to return. If you get stranded, call for help, and stay with your group and vehicle until help arrives.
  • Please dispose of trees properly. Consider composting or using the tree as firewood, if those are options available to you.
  • Keep in mind that hunting seasons are usually open during these times, so wearing bright colors is advisable.

Tree Cutting Tips

  • Carry your tree carefully. Dragging the tree will rub off needles and bark.
  • If the tree is too big to transport inside of your vehicle, wrap it in canvas to prevent wind damage.
  • Once home, cut the bottom of the trunk off and place the freshly cut trunk in a bucket of water. Replenish water.
  • If storing your tree outside for a few days before putting it in the house, keep it in an area protected from the wind, such as the north or east side of your house or under a shaded tree.
  • Tools you might want to consider bringing with you include a measuring tape to ensure you select a tree that fits in your home; handsaw to cut your tree; gloves to protect your hands; boots to protect your feet; a tarp to sit on and/or to move your tree once it's cut; and rope or straps to secure your tree to your vehicle.
  • Choose a tree from a dense forested area, which will give the remaining trees more space to grow.
  • Cut the leftover branches from the stump and scatter them.
