What We Manage

The BLM manages one in every 10 acres of land in the United States, and approximately 30 percent of the Nation’s minerals. These lands and minerals are found in every state in the country and encompass forests, mountains, rangelands, arctic tundra, and deserts.

National Office
The Bureau of Land Management administers more surface land (245 million acres or one-tenth of America’s land base) and more subsurface mineral estate (700 million acres) than any other government agency in the United States.

Alaska
The BLM manages approximately 70 million surface acres and 220 million subsurface acres (Federal mineral estate) in Alaska, a state with a landmass equivalent to about one-fifth of the entire contiguous United States.

Arizona
The BLM manages 12.1 million acres of public lands and another 17.5 million subsurface acres of locatable, leasable, and salable minerals in Arizona.

California
The BLM manages 15 million acres of public lands in California and 47 million acres of subsurface mineral estate. We also manage 1.6 million surface acres in northwestern Nevada.

Colorado
The BLM manages 8.3 million acres of public lands and 27 million acres of federal mineral estate in Colorado.

BLM Eastern States manages over 40,000 surface acres of public land for multiple use in the 31 states east of and bordering the Mississippi River.

Idaho
The BLM manages nearly 12 million acres of public land for multiple use in Idaho.

The BLM manages about 8.3 million acres of public lands for multiple use and about 47.1 million acres of federal mineral estate in Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota.

Nevada
The BLM manages nearly 48 million acres of public land for multiple use in Nevada, which accounts for about 63 percent of the state's land base.

The BLM manages 13.5 million acres of public lands in New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, and Kansas, plus 42 million acres of federal mineral estate.
