New Mexico Wood Cutting Permits
Fuelwood Permits
The Bureau of Land Management New Mexico sells fuelwood permits for personal use to the public. Fuelwood permits cost $5 - $20 per cord and are available in person at select locations or online. Please see our Interactive Fuelwood Harvest Areas Map for maps of open wood-cutting areas,
In almost all field offices, BLM fuelwood permits are valid for cutting only dead (down or standing) piñon and juniper (cedar). Cutting green trees or other trees not allowed by permit is strictly prohibited. Minimum and maximum cords for purchase vary by field office. Rules, regulations, and timing vary slightly between field offices; please read all materials that accompany your permit.

Penalties
If you want to collect wood on BLM land, you need a fuelwood permit. Without a permit, you can be fined $300 or more. Cutting green trees adds another $50 fine for each tree. In some cases, BLM officers can take your tools, trailers, or vehicles if they’re used for illegal cutting. By getting a permit, you help protect the land and make sure wood is available for everyone. It’s an easy way to avoid fines and support responsible use of our natural resources.
