BLM Wyoming Fire Information

BLM Wyoming manages wildland fire and aviation activities on approximately 17.5 million acres of public land in Wyoming and Nebraska.  The primary focus of the Wyoming Wildland Fire and Aviation Program is to provide for firefighter and public safety, the protection of life and property, while also protecting and promoting ecosystem health.  The Fire and Aviation Program in Wyoming is organized into three district programs; Wind River/Big Horn Basin, High Desert, and High Plains.  Additionally, two Interagency Dispatch Centers support fire and aviation, which are located in Cody and Casper. BLM firefighting assets in the state in include 16 engines, the Devil's Canyon Veteran hand crew, one water tender, and an exclusive use helitack crew with a light (type 3) helicopter.

The Fire and Aviation program has about 180 employees. Approximately 75,000 acres of lands are treated to remove hazardous fuels annually.  These treatments help protect sage-grouse habitat as well as homes, communities and infrastructure from wildfires.  Fire resources work hard year round conducting training and working with interagency partners such as Wyoming State Forestry and the United States Forest Service, as well as local fire departments.

Fire Partnerships

BLM Wyoming Fire and Aviation is a proud partner of both local and at the state agencies and cooperators.  Most fire suppression in Wyoming includes assistance from members of the Wyoming Rural Firefighter Association and county fire wardens.  Every year firefighters dedicate countless hours working together in rural communities and training though the BLM’s Rural Fire Assistance program. The hazardous fuels program works closely with resource conservation non-government organizations as well as the Wyoming Department of Game and Fish to protect rangeland, improve habitat and create fire adapted ecosystems.
