BLM Alaska Mining and Minerals
Gold, silver, copper, zinc, graphite, cobalt, lead, Rare Earth Elements, and other minerals are found in Alaska, many of which are actively mined. In fact, many of these minerals are critical components in renewable energy technology. Of course placer mining, long a mainstay of Alaska's gold mining industry, still operates today, as well.
BLM Alaska manages almost 7,000 Federal mining claims and 137 active mines and Mining Operation Plans on public lands. The majority of BLM's mineral material sites are for sand and gravel.
The BLM Alaska minerals program has responsibilities and adjudicative duties associated with Federal mining claims, mineral surveys and patents, validation of title evidence, review of mineral validity reports, service of Federal minerals contest actions. It also provides guidance for use and occupancy under mining laws and surface use management. Additionally, it processes mineral lease applications, mineral materials, solid minerals prospecting permits, bonding documentation, and oil and gas reinstatement actions.
Living a modern, renewable energy lifestyle with electric cars, wind turbines, solar panels, geothermal facilities, smart phones, computers, and high-tech equipment all depends on minerals.
