The Little Snake Field Office administers 1.3 million acres of public and 1.1 million acres of subsurface minerals in Moffat, Routt and Rio Blanco counties.

Field Office Spotlight:

Sand Wash Basin

The Sand Wash Basin is located northwest of Maybell. This scenic expanse of high desert country is a destination for OHV enthusiasts. The area is also home to the world-renowned wild horse herd that can be viewed throughout most of the year.

Emerald Mountain Special Recreation Management Area

This day-use only recreation area located near Steamboat Springs provides opportunities for hiking, horseback riding and mountain biking in the summer. Moderately challenging Nordic and back-country skiing are popular in the winter. The trails within Emerald Mountain provide views of Mt. Werner, Sleeping Giant Mountain and other scenic icons of the Yampa Valley. A seasonal closure is in effect December 1 - June 30 to protect wintering and calving elk within the area south of Ridge Trail.  There is currently a temporary closure in place for fuels reduction mastication work.

Little Yampa Canyon Special Recreation Management Area

Located between Craig and Meeker, the Little Yampa Canyon SRMA includes public lands on Duffy, Illes and Juniper mountains. Portions of the Yampa River and Yampa Valley Trail are within the SRMA. The Yampa River through here is a popular flat-water floating trip and the Yampa Valley Trail extends from Steamboat Springs to Dinosaur and connects with other regional trails.

Cross Mountain Wilderness Study Area

Cross Mountain is a flat-topped land mass that rises nearly 2,200 feet above the Yampa and Little Snake rivers. Over time, the Yampa River cut a 1,000-foot-deep gorge through Cross Mountain Canyon which provides a whitewater challenge for expert kayakers.
