Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area offers a number of opportunities for educational groups. The 100-acre park hosts some of Oregon’s best tidepools, a 19th century lighthouse, an Interpretive Center and opportunities for birdwatching, wildlife viewing, and hiking.

Every Kid Outdoors interagency park passes are available to all 4th grade students. These provide free access to National Parks, Bureau of Land Management, US Forest Service, US Fish and Wildlife Service, US Army Corps of Engineers and Bureau of Reclamation Lands. Throughout the year, classes may participate in a teacher-led activity. From April 15th through June 14th, 2024 school groups can choose one of several standards-based ranger-led programs, offered for K-12 grade students. There is no entrance fee or a charge for any of the Yaquina Head educational programs, but reservations are mandatory.

Reservations

With over 450,000 visitors a year, Yaquina Head can be a very busy place. For the safety and enjoyment of all visitors, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) offers several reservation options for visiting school groups.

Ranger-led Education Programs – April 15th through June 14th. Ranger-led programs (2 hours in length) offer teachers and students the opportunity to participate in guided exploration of the intertidal area using standards linked to state curriculum.

Teacher-led Education Programs – Year Round. Teachers/Professors are welcome to explore Yaquina Head with their students by coming prepared with educational outcomes in mind. *Note: April 15th – June 14th priority will be given to ranger-led groups. Reservations during this time are not guaranteed to be accepted due to limited tidepool capacity. Additional tidepool slots will become available as staffing levels increase and teacher-led programs may have the option to change to ranger-led.

Yaquina Head Lighthouse Yaquina Head LighthouseThe United States Congress designated the Lower White River Wilderness in 2009 and it now has a total of 2,806 acres. All of this wilderness is located in Oregon and is managed by the Bureau of Land Management and the Forest Service. The White River rises in the high Cascades in western Wasco County, in the Mount Hood National Forest on the southeast flank of Mount Hood. The headwaters are just below White River Glacier in White River Canyon. Winter Beach Safety

Winter weather along the coast can be dramatic, beautiful and extremely dangerous. Please hold onto car doors when getting in and out. On beaches high surf and sneaker waves can knock walkers off their feet. Never turn your back on the ocean and keep children within arm’s reach.
