On a dark night in August, Darwin resident Steven Heller opened his front door to see a visitor. Not a neighbor, but a wild burro standing several feet from his porch, staring straight at him.
In many other towns, a wild burro at your front door is a startling sight, but in Darwin, CA, human visitors are rare and wild burros are regular and welcome guests. Wild burros frequently wander into town from the Centennial Herd Management Area, walking the roads or stopping for a drink from the overflow of the town’s water tanks.
The BLM Comprehensive Animal Welfare Program (CAWP) team recently released its latest evaluation of the BLM High Plains District’s Wheatland Off-Range Corral, giving the facility an impressive 97% compliance rating.
All available, inmate-trained wild horses and burros were adopted at the Wyoming Honor Farm fall adoption. One horse has a bright future teaching horsemanship at a college in Lander.
