Six Mile Dam

Now a renowned birding and fishing area, Six Mile Dam serves as an example of the power of cooperation and persistence. Once known as a party spot and a place to dump trash, these lands are now used for hiking, kayaking, fishing, picnicking, and birding after years of effort by the BLM Carlsbad Field Office, the City of Carlsbad, non-profits, industry partners, and public volunteers to provide improvements to the area. Six Mile Dam is considered one of the best marsh areas remaining in the Pecos Valley and more than 300 species of birds have been spotted in the area.

Accessibility Description (ABA/ADA)

There are no identified accessible parking spots for this day-use site. The entire parking lot is packed gravel and would be appropriate for accessible vans or other vehicles. Parking is also available next to the individual picnic sites, using a dirt and packed-gravel road along the Pecos River. The site does not have toilets or running water.

All 10 picnic sites east of the Dam have a shade shelter covering a picnic table with an extended end to accommodate wheelchair users. The tables sit on 12 x 12-foot concrete pads. To the west of the Dam are 4 additional covered picnic tables on smaller concrete pads with a 1-inch lip from the ground. The two westernmost tables are fenced off and not considered accessible. None of the picnic sites have fire rings or grills.

A concrete viewing platform with railings around it extends over the river. This platform, which is not managed by the BLM, affords wildlife-viewing opportunities for visitors using wheelchairs and other mobility devices. A panel with information about birding and community partnerships is mounted on an obelisk on the platform, at an appropriate height.

The site has a dock for kayaks and canoes. A cement ramp leads to the dock, which is equipped with an accessible EZ Launch transfer-bench system, allowing people to smoothly transition from their wheelchair into the kayak. No parking is available for the boat launch.

Cell phone reception is good.
