Mill Canyon Dinosaur Trailhead Interpretive Site

The Mill Canyon Dinosaur Tracksite is an Early Cretaceous (approximately 112 million years ago) dinosaur tracksite located north of Moab in Grand County, Utah. First reported in 2009, the site contains over 200 tracks and traces representing at least ten different types of animals, including nonavian theropods, sauropods, ornithopods, ankylosaurs, birds, and crocodiles. These well-preserved trace fossils preserve the movements and activities of a unique and diverse Mesozoic fauna.

The site is a short walk from the parking area to the site. Road is accessible by most vehicles. Learn more from the Mill Canyon Dinosaur Tracksite brochure.

Please visit the site respectfully by staying on the boardwalk, leaving what you find, and respecting the fossil resources.

The Mill Canyon Dinosaur Tracksite Paleontological Assessment released on March 8, 2022, confirmed there was minor damage to some dinosaur footprints, primarily north of the main interpretive site at the Mill Canyon Dinosaur Tracksite. To ensure this does not happen again, the BLM is following the recommendations in the assessment, including public input and working with the paleontology community as we collectively move forward on constructing boardwalks at the interpretive site. The maintenance and restoration of these interpretive walkways are necessary to provide managed access to the paleontological resources at this important site. 

The BLM provided an opportunity for the public to comment on a new environmental assessment from June 24 to July 26, 2022. The opportunity to comment was publicized through a press release, email distribution, social media and the ePlanning project page. The BLM received seven comments on the environmental assessment. Edits and clarifications were made based on the input from the public prior to and during the comment period, including the development of additional design features, stipulations and mitigation to protect the tracksite.  

The BLM is committed to following the stipulations outlined in the environmental assessment and decision. Construction is complete and the new boardwalk is open for use.
