Cove Recreation Site

Overview

Cove Recreation Site, on C.J. Strike Reservoir, is the BLM's only improved public camping facility within the Morley Nelson Snake River Birds of Prey National Conservation Area (NCA). This site is first come, first served. Facilities at this fee area include potable water, picnic shelters, fire rings, picnic tables, fishing docks, an RV dump station and a small boat ramp.

Drinking water is generally available during summer months. Cove is a fee campground: Day Use - $5.00; Camping $15.00/night. A seasonal camp host is often on site during summer months to assist visitors.

Fishing is the main attraction at Cove either from shore or from a boat. The water level stays constant, providing good opportunities throughout the year. Trout, smallmouth and largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, yellow perch, channel catfish, bullhead, and sturgeon can all be found in the waters of CJ Strike Reservoir.

Accessibility Description (ABA/ADA)

View images of accessibility features in a new window.

Entrance / fee boxes. A fee box sits on concrete at the main entrance; a second fee box is on concrete near the boat ramp in the northwestern section of the site. The Access Pass is accepted at this site. Information kiosks near these boxes display campground rules, the sheriff’s phone number, and other site and safety information.

Cell phone reception at the site is spotty. Generally, the closer to the water you are, the weaker the signal will be.

Toilets. There are 6 accessible double vault toilets on concrete pads throughout the site, including one in the day-use area. Every toilet has an accessible parking space next to it. These spaces are signed and the surface is gravel, which might be challenging to push a wheelchair through. Be aware that one of the toilets (Photo 6) has large boulders around the concrete pad. The space between the boulders might be too narrow for a wheelchair to pass through.

Drinking water. There are about 12 water hydrants scattered throughout the site. They all have easy-to-use lever valves. All but 2 of them sit on uneven ground that will be difficult for visitors using wheelchairs to access.

Day-Use Area. The Cove Point Day-Use Area is in the northeast part of the site by Cove Inlet. It has a small parking lot that doesn’t have any designated accessible spaces but should be suitable for visitors using wheelchairs and other mobility devices. Day-use sites have a cabana covering a concrete pad and a metal picnic table that can accommodate wheelchair users. The concrete pad extends beyond the cabana and surrounds a double-walled fire ring with a grill.

Boat ramp parking. West of the boat ramp is a packed-gravel parking lot. None of the spaces are designated as accessible but the lot should be suitable for people using mobility devices. A nearby double vault toilet also has a designated accessible parking space. The boat ramp itself is not considered to be accessible, although it is packed gravel that leads to a concrete slab that goes into the water, so some visitors with limited mobility could get right up to the water on the ramp when it’s not in use.

Campground. Loop roads of packed gravel and natural surface connect the 41 campsites, 34 of which have cabana-type shade shelters. Some stretches of these roads and other paths through the camping area may be challenging for mobility device users.

The Campground has an interpretive panel with details about the Oregon Trail and a map of the area. The panel is on uneven ground but can be viewed from a vehicle.

Most campsites have a cabana covering a concrete pad, a picnic table that can accommodate wheelchair users, and a double-walled fire ring with grill. Not every campsite has its own spur, because some are triple and double sites, for use by families or groups. A few sites have parking only, with no concrete pad, picnic table, or fire ring.

The transition from the parking area east of the boat ramp to the 8 campsites along the water is packed gravel with a steep grade in some places, which may be tricky to maneuver for some mobility device users.

A larger group campsite with a large cabana is in the southern portion of the site in the Round Loop, which is near the 2 camp host sites and the entrance. The cabana covers a concrete pad with a large grill and 4 picnic tables that can accommodate wheelchair users.

Trash cans are scattered throughout the site.
