Twin Coulee WSA
Values
Most of the Twin Coulee WSA is covered by a dense mixed conifer forest of small trees. There are rocky limestone outcrops in parts of the WSA, but large open areas from which a view is possible are distant from access points. The landscape is rugged, cut by several deeply incised drainages. Recreation opportunities include hunting, hiking, camping and nature study. Twin Coulee is contiguous with the Big Snowies WSA managed by the Forest Service.
Visitation
From Lewistown, MT drive Highway 238 south 31.1 miles to the Big Snowy Trail. Pavement on Highway 238 ends at 11.1 miles, and is known as Red Hill Road from this point on. The Big Snowy Trail crosses only a few hundred feet of the Twin Coulee WSA before entering the Big Snowies WSA. The Twin Coulee WSA can be further accessed from a large switchback in the road about 1.8 miles past the Big Snowy Trail, or from a point on the right identified by an “Entering Public Lands” sign 2.4 miles further. Access from these locations is off-trail.
Visitor Advisory
Except for the Big Snowy Trail, there are no trails in the WSA. Thick forest make it difficult to navigate, and the potential for getting lost is a hazard.
