Black Canyon Wilderness Study Area

Values

Most of the Black Canyon WSA is a flat prairie which rises gently to the north. The WSA's northern half is composed of rolling hills broken by canyons varying in size. The west edge of the WSA has unusual rock formations of weathered rhyolite. Several species of wildlife including elk, deer, antelope, coyotes, birds of prey, upland game birds and black bears are found in the WSA.

Visitation Information

In Idaho, BLM manages over 10,000 acres of public lands in the Black Canyon I Wilderness Study Area. Primitive recreation opportunities for hiking, camping and nature study can be found here. Other recreation opportunities can be found at the nearby Little City of Rocks WSA.

Visitor Advisory

Black Canyon WSA is most easily accessible via City of Rocks Road north of Gooding, Idaho. Visitors should consult a map and come prepared for travel on unmaintained two-track roads and rugged backcountry hiking.
