Values

Cross Mountain, an oblong, flat-topped mountain, is an easily-identifiable landmark in the region. The mountain rises over 2,200 feet above surrounding valleys. The Yampa River cuts a 1,000-foot-deep gorge through the mountain forming Cross Mountain Canyon. Here the Yampa River is an expert whitewater kayaking opportunity, providing a challenging high risk run not found elsewhere in the region. The mountain's east and west flanks contain scenic colorful, rocky rims, side canyons and rock outcrops. Pockets of aspen are found on the east flank of the mountain and a relic stand of ponderosa pine set in red sandstone slick rock adds scenic values. The south end of Cross Mountain is excellent for day hikes while the north end of the mountain provides a large area for overnight backpacking. The WSA also provides for hunting, fishing and photography opportunities.
