ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Campbell Creek Science Center (CCSC) is offering a wide variety of free and fee-based outdoor programs for the public this summer.

Popular programs include day and evening hikes, nature journaling, Junior Ranger, and TOTs (Time Outside Together). While some programs do have modest fees, many of them are free.  All program fees stay on site to support CCSC programs.

“We want the public to get out and explore their public lands,” said Nancy Patterson, CCSC manager. “All our programs are designed to help people get more out of their adventures in Alaska, enjoy and learn about the natural world, and to be excited about all the nature that’s right here in Anchorage.”

Some of the programs include:

Junior Ranger: Tree-mendous Trees— For kids 8-12 years old, this 2-hour activity is designed to help kids explore the forest through games and a guided walk. Registration is required and an accompanying adult must join the fun. Cost is $10 per child.

Nature Journaling: Lichens and Moss — Nature journaling is the science and art of learning from nature through field sketching and writing. All materials provided, but if you have a favorite journal or sketchbook, please bring it. Cost is $10 per participant.

Forest Ecology Hikes: Hike along Campbell Creek and learn more about the many connections in the forest ecosystem, how plant eaters benefit from the presence of salmon in the creek, and why salmon die after they spawn. Dress for the outdoors no matter the weather and come prepared to travel up to a mile on uneven trails. This program is free and open to the public.

TOTs (Time Outside Together): Insects — This 1.5-hour program offers hands-on opportunities to explore the natural world for children ages 0-4 and their caregivers. This month, you and your tot will explore insects! Themes change each month, but programs always include guided exploration, reading, songs and sensory activities. Register for this free program.
