ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The Bureau of Land Management today announced an approximately $1.4 million investment through President Biden’s Investing in America agenda, to gather data from large, interconnected upland, riparian, and wetland habitats across Alaska, in order to improve the Bureau’s understanding of ecosystem resilience and how it changes over time. These funds are made available from the Inflation Reduction Act—the largest ever investment in climate.

The BLM uses its Assessment, Inventory and Monitoring framework to gather data and report on the condition and trend of natural resources across BLM-managed lands. The information collected through the AIM framework provides current habitat conditions and documents the effects of past land use, informing future permit authorizations and management efforts.

The investment announced today will be used to train more people to collect this important data across approximately 27 million acres of BLM-managed public lands in Alaska. Those lands stretch across the jurisdictions of BLM Alaska’s Eastern Interior, Central Yukon, and Anchorage field offices.

“This work will provide the BLM, our partners, and the public with baseline information across vast areas of Alaska that currently have little available information about vegetation resources and habitat condition,” said Tina Boucher, AIM Coordinator for Alaska. “This data will allow us to document and understand how these ecosystems are functioning so we can support healthy, productive landscapes into the future.”

Data collection started in 2022 and is projected to run through 2026.The data are publicly available on the BLM’s Assessment Inventory and Monitoring website
