BLM to hold public meetings for supplemental analysis of Ambler Road Proposal

FAIRBANKS, Alaska – The Bureau of Land Management will host public meetings and subsistence hearings to seek input on the draft supplemental environmental impact statement (EIS) for the Ambler Road project proposed by the Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority (AIDEA).  

The draft supplemental EIS released earlier this month will be available for public review and comment until December 22, 2023. Consultation with Alaska Native Tribes and Corporations informed the supplemental analysis and BLM will continue to consult with Alaska Native Tribes and Corporations throughout the National Environmental Policy Act process. 

The BLM plans to host public meetings in Anchorage, Fairbanks, Kotzebue, and nine communities near the proposed industrial road route. Each meeting will feature a short presentation, opportunities for public comment, and a hearing considering potential impacts to subsistence resources and activities under Section 810 of the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA). The current meeting schedule is: 

Nov. 02 | 7:00-9:00 p.m. | Fairbanks at the Raven Landing Hall  

Nov. 07 | 7:00-9:00 p.m. | Evansville at the Community Building 

Nov. 08 | 7:00-9:00 p.m. | Kiana at the Community Building 

Nov. 09 | 7:00-9:00 p.m. | Kotzebue at the Kotzebue Youth Center 

Nov. 13 | 7:00-9:00 p.m. | Allakaket at the Community Hall 

Nov. 14 | 7:00-9:00 p.m. | Selawik at the Multipurpose Building 

Nov. 15 | 7:00-9:00 p.m. | Kobuk at the Kobuk School Gymnasium 

Nov. 16 | 7:00-9:00 p.m. | Shungnak at the Shungnak School 

Dec. 14 | 7:00-9:00 p.m. | Alatna at the Tribal Office 

The date and venue for the meetings in Anchorage, Ambler and Huslia are still being arranged. Updates to the meeting schedule, including additional meetings or schedule changes due to weather or other circumstances, will be posted on the project webpage. At that webpage, the public can also review the supplemental EIS or submit written comments on the analysis by selecting “Participate Now” before the public comment period closes December 22, 2023.
