Information Bulletin No. 2011-026

To:                  All Field Office Officials

                       Attn:  Recreation Planners

From:            Chief, Division of Recreation and Visitor Services

Subject:         Bureau of Land Management Fee-Free Days for the 2011 Summer Season

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), in conjunction with other agencies within the Department of the Interior, will waive recreation-related fees for visitors to the National System of Public Lands on the following dates in 2011:  the first day of summer, June 21; National Public Lands Day, scheduled for September 24; and the Veterans Day holiday weekend, November 11–13.  These fee-free days include areas managed within the BLM’s National Landscape Conservation System (NLCS).

The fee-free requirement only applies to standard amenity fees, although other fees may be waived as the field office manager deems appropriate.  For data collection and accountability purposes, a zero-value receipt equivalent to a one-day pass may be issued to those visitors whose fee is waived.

We will also distribute “fee-free coupons” to volunteers who participate in the BLM’s September 24, 2011, National Public Lands Day observance; further guidance for that will be issued at a later date.

While other Federal land management agencies may observe “fee-free” dates other than the dates outlined by the BLM, the BLM field units/fee sites in jointly managed areas, near, or adjacent to other Federal units are encouraged to offer similar fee free access.  In general, these “fee-free” days may waive standard amenity fees and individual day-use fees (e.g., visitor centers and within National Landscape System units); however, other fees, i.e., those for group day use, overnight camping, and cabin rentals, will remain in effect.

For more information about this summer’s fee-free days, please visit the BLM Fee-Free Days Web site at: http://www.blm.gov/wo/st/en/prog/Recreation/BLM_Fee_Free_Days.html.  If you have questions concerning this Information Bulletin, please contact Anthony Bobo, Jr., BLM Recreation Fee and Permit Program Manager, Division of Recreation and Visitor Services (WO-250), at 202-912-7248 or Anthony_Bobo@blm.gov.
