RENO, Nev. - A new Fire Prevention Order will be in effect in Nevada starting Thursday, May 1, 2025. This order, issued by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), prohibits certain fire-related activities on BLM-managed lands, which cover about 63% of the state, totaling nearly 48 million acres.

"Most wildfires in Nevada are caused by humans*, often accidentally, and too often are entirely preventable," said Brock Uhlig, the BLM Nevada Fire Management Officer.

*On average, human-caused wildfires account for 85% of wildfires in the nation each year.

"This fire prevention order addresses some of the most common and preventable causes of wildfires. By following these measures and taking simple precautions—such as keeping a fire extinguisher and water on hand in case a fire starts—we can make a significant difference in preventing wildfires."

Fire Prevention Order prohibits:

  • Possessing, discharging, or using fireworks, pyrotechnic, or incendiary devices.
  • Possessing, discharging, or igniting explosives or explosive material, including binary explosive targets.
  • Discharging a firearm using tracer, incendiary, or steel-component ammunition.
  • Operating or using any internal or external combustion engine without a spark arresting device which has been properly installed, maintained, and is in effective working order.

It’s important to note that individual BLM Nevada districts may impose additional restrictions. Fire restrictions may also vary on public lands managed by other agencies.

Individuals who knowingly and willfully engage in restricted or prohibited activities may face fines and be held responsible for any fire suppression or rehabilitation costs that result from their actions.

Before you set out, always check the specific restrictions for the area you plan to explore. The public is encouraged to visit NevadaFireInfo.org/restrictions for a map of current restrictions and review a map of agency jurisdictions in Nevada.
