ELKO, Nev. – The Bureau of Land Management today issued updates for how the agency will manage weeds and support wildlife restoration and rehabilitation work on public lands effected. The updates affect wildland fire in Elko County and the northern portions of Eureka and Lander counties and incorporate comments and suggestions from the public and other resource management agencies.

The updates promote the latest innovations in rangeland research and ecology, include new site stabilization and seeding technologies, and update what herbicides can be used to treat invasive annual grasses and noxious weeds on public lands. More information and planning documents are available at the BLM National NEPA Register.

From the year 2000 through 2023, the Elko District has treated nearly 1,280,000 public acres after wildland fires and has inventoried and treated with herbicides an average of approximately 763,000 public acres annually over that time.

The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public land located primarily in 12 western states, including Alaska, on behalf of the American people. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. Our mission is to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of America’s public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations.
