BLM Idaho’s Salmon Field Office adds new rental cabin enhancing Continental Divide Trail experience
SALMON, Idaho — The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) announces the completion of a new rental cabin along the Continental Divide Trail for through-hikers, snowmobilers, skiers, horseback riders, hunters, and the recreating public managed by the Salmon Field Office. Construction began with the cabin’s foundation, poured in 2021, but due to the remote location near Lemhi Pass, the construction of “Tarpons Roost” was completed in late 2024.
The cabin sleeps six and will be available for rent year-round. It includes a table with benches, cooking and eating utensils and equipment, axe, shovel, bucket, cleaning supplies and firewood (during the winter months). Other amenities, included in the nightly rental fee of $75, are a concrete vault bathroom, gravel parking area, horse corrals, briquette grill, picnic area, and fire pit.
“Tarpons Roost is in a fabulous location,” said BLM Salmon Field Manager Vincent Guyer, “and we are very excited to offer this remote lodging opportunity to the public all year long. With its fabulous log structure and amazing scenery, I’m sure the public will enjoy it for many years to come.”
Tarpons Roost is included in the newly signed Salmon Recreation Business Plan, which establishes the nightly fee for the new reservable rental cabin to be used for maintenance and yearly operations costs. The fee was determined through a comparative cost review of similar public and private facilities in surrounding counties. Fees help offset operational and maintenance costs including vault toilet pumping, vandalism repair and road and trail maintenance. The rationale for the fees, comparisons to other campgrounds with similar amenities, operating costs and anticipated revenue are found in the business plan.
