MOAB, Utah — The Bureau of Land Management today announced approval of two mineral exploration projects on public lands in the Red Wash Potash Leasing Area of Grand County that could lead to future lithium development. Lithium is one of 50 minerals identified as critical by the U.S. Geological Survey and is used extensively in batteries in portable electronic devices, vehicles, and grid storage applications.

“The BLM is tasked with ensuring public lands serve multiple uses, whether those are recreation-based activities or opportunities for responsible mineral and energy development,” said Moab Field Manager Dave Pals. “These permits demonstrate BLM’s continued efforts to support responsible mineral exploration on public lands.”

The A1 Lithium Mineral Exploration project is approved to assess quantities of lithium, bromine, and associated minerals by re-entering two plugged and abandoned wellbores, with an estimated 7 acres of total surface disturbance. The decision and associated planning documents are available at the BLM National NEPA Register.

The American Potash LLC Green River Potash project is approved to explore for potassium-bearing minerals and lithium by drilling up to four holes with an estimated 13 acres of total surface disturbance. Potash is an important ingredient in agricultural fertilizer. The decision and associated planning documents are available at the BLM National NEPA Register.

The Red Wash Potash Leasing Area was designated by the 2016 Moab Master Leasing Plan that applies stringent reclamation requirements and sets limits on surface-disturbing activities. Both projects are expected to conclude within two years, at which time both companies are required to plug the drill holes and reclaim the disturbed area.
