2024 Spruce Up Prescribed Burn
Project Overview
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Cottonwood Field Office plans to treat approximately 45 acres of hazardous fuel accumulations, such as dry grass, limbs and shrubs, generated from the Spruce Up Timber Sale. The project is divided into 4 separate units ranging from 4 to 18 acres. The units are in close proximity to private property and are adjacent to the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests in the Red River Ranger District. The project is located in Idaho County, 3 miles west of Elk City, near the South Fork Clearwater River and the Crooked River drainage.
Primary Objectives
- Reduce ground surface fuels created from harvest activities.
- Create openings within the ground fuels for future tree planting.
- Help reduce potential wildfire behavior.
- Limit the spread of uncontrolled wildfires across ownerships.
- Increase collaboration and engagement to work across boundaries with private landowners and neighboring agencies.
Implementation
If conditions are favorable, implementation is planned to occur from Friday June 6, 2024, through Saturday June 7, 2024. Smoke will be visible from Elk City, Highway 14, and the Crooked River Road. Residual smoke from smoldering stumps and large logs could still be visible for several days to a couple of weeks after ignitions have been complete.
