Blacktail Mountains WSA

Values

The Blacktail Mountains WSA is predominantly forested.  Located near sagebrush and riparian habitats, the edge effect of the different but adjoining habitats supports a broad array and abundance of wildlife species.  Big game hunting is outstanding in the WSA.

Visitation

From Dillon, MT at the intersection of Highway 91 and Blacktail Road, drive south on Blacktail Road for about 6.7 miles and the pavement will turn to gravel.  Continue on Blacktail Road for another 3.9 miles and turn right into a gravel quarry.  Follow a dirt road immediately to the right about 2.4 miles across state land to its end (on state land) at the mouth of Weston Canyon.  An unmaintained trail (steep) leads up the canyon bottom into the WSA.

Visitor Advisory

Be bear aware! Proper food storage and carrying bear spray is encouraged.  The trail in the WSA is not a BLM maintained trail, and so is not well marked.  Originating from the early logging era, it is very steep.
