Winnemucca BLM starts Emergency Stabilization and Rehabilitation on the Martin Fire burn area

WINNEMUCCA, NV – With the Environmental analysis complete and a Decision issued, implementation of the Martin Fire Emergency Stabilization and Rehabilitation (ES&R) plan has begun. The first round of funding has been received, the Winnemucca District (WD) Fuels and ES&R program began treating the west part 416,821 acre Martin Fire burn area October 22. Utility Task Vehicle (UTV) broadcast seeding began on the Martin Fire burn area using left over native seed from past fires. Extra seed that will be need to complete the ES&R plan has been ordered.

On Monday, November 5, BLM WD will be picking up more than 40,000 sagebrush seedlings from the Lucky Peak nursery in Boise, Idaho. On November 10, Winnemucca District BLM, Nevada Muleys, Nevada Bighorn Unlimited, and the Nevada Department of Wildlife along with volunteers, will start sagebrush seedling planting in an effort to improve winter habitat for mule deer and other species within the 2018 Martin Fire burn area.

Post-fire ES&R efforts and treatments will include spraying of by using pre-emergent, prevention of invasive species and retention of native seed “islands”, UTV broadcast seeding, hand planting of bitterbrush and sagebrush seedlings, drill seeding, aerially seeding, mulch application for erosion control, and fence repair.
