CASPER, Wyo. – Visit the National Historic Trails Interpretive Center on Saturday, October 8 for a special presentation by local writer and historian Tom Rea. Rea will present “Thomas Twiss, a Man of Two Worlds” at 11 a.m.

West Point Academy graduate Thomas Twiss arrived at Fort Laramie as a civilian in 1855. As a U.S. agent to the Native American tribes of the upper Platte Valley, he was tasked with keeping government promises to tribes and keeping the peace in all directions. Soon after, he had an Oglala family on Deer Creek near present-day Glenrock, Wyoming, in addition to his family back east. He lived in two worlds for decades. His life and choices provide fascinating insights into a fast-changing time in history.

Rea is the editor and co-founder, with the Wyoming Historical Society, of the state history website WyoHistory.org. His books include “Devil’s Gate: Owning the Land, Owning the Story”, a history of people in the Sweetwater Valley. He is also president of the Wyoming chapter of the Oregon-California Trails Association.
