WINNEMUCCA, Nev. — The public is invited to provide input for the new Pine Forest Range Wilderness Area management plan. The 90-day pre-scoping comment period closes December 20.

On December 19, 2014, the Pine Forest Range Wilderness was added to the National Wilderness Preservation System by the Carl Levin and Howard P. “Buck” McKeon National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2015 (Public Law 113-291). The Pine Forest Range Wilderness is located approximately 70 miles northwest of Winnemucca, Nevada and 25 miles southwest of Denio, Nevada in Humboldt County. Public Law 113-291 can be accessed here.

A “wilderness” is an area where the earth and its community of life are untrammeled by humans, where humans are visitors who do not remain. Areas designated as wilderness are usually undeveloped Federal land retaining its primeval character and influence, without permanent improvements or human habitation, which is protected and managed to preserve its natural conditions. Wilderness designation can only be accomplished through legislation.

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is directed to develop a wilderness management plan for all wilderness areas on public lands per BLM Manuals 6340 and 8561. Comments should include information to aid BLM in understanding existing conditions or to identify where and what management actions may be needed in the wilderness. The comments will be used to help determine preliminary issues and concerns during the development of the proposed Pine Forest Range wilderness management plan.
