BLM Wyoming hosts two exciting wild horse and burro events in August

CHEYENNE, Wyo. —  The Bureau of Land Management will hold two Wyoming wild horse and burro adoption events in August featuring both untrained and trained horses.

  • August 6, Wheatland Corrals: Approximately 25-35 untrained wild horses and burros will be available at this month’s public adoption. The gates open at 8 a.m. and horses will be adopted on a first come, first served basis with the event scheduled to end at 3 p.m. TIP trainers will be able to select horses at noon. Load out of horses will begin once all required paperwork is complete. Horses and burros at the Wheatland Facility are untrained and eligible for the Adoption Incentive Program. The facility is located at 1005 North Wheatland Highway in Wheatland.
     
  • August 20-22, Wyoming Mustang Days: Join the BLM, the Wyoming Mustang Association, and the Mantle Adoption and Training Facility at the Wyoming State Fair in Douglas for Wyoming Mustang Days.

    The weekend kicks off with a Wyoming TIP Challenge event on Friday, August 20, from 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. in the Pepsi Equine Center. This event features trainers that applied to work with mustangs and burros adopted or purchased from the BLM.  The trainers competing in the TIP challenge have only 100 days to show what they can do. The weekend continues with the “All Mustang Horse Show” on Saturday, August 21, from 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. in the Pepsi Equine Center.     Mustang Days wraps up on Sunday with a “Back on Track Clinic” hosted by the Mantle Adoption and Training Facility also in the Pepsi Event Center.  Back on track sessions will run from 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. Registration is required for the “Back on Track Clinic”, and if you have an untitled BLM mustang or burro that needs some work, you can register by contacting the Mantle Adoption and Training Facility at 307-331-2225 or mantle771@gmail.com.
     

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act, passed unanimously by Congress and signed into law on Dec. 15, 1971. To mark this anniversary, the BLM is holding a series of events around the country highlighting the value of wild horses and burros as enduring symbols of our national heritage.
