BLM seeks public comment to lease land to the Clark County School District for an elementary school

LAS VEGAS – The Bureau of Land Management Las Vegas Field Office is seeking public comment on a proposal to lease approximately 15 acres of public land to the Clark County School District for an elementary school and related facilities.  The proposed elementary school is located on the north half of Gary Avenue, south half of Richmar Avenue, and a portion of the west half of Polaris Avenue in the southwest area of the Las Vegas Valley.  The 15 acres would include five school buildings, parking for school staff, public parking, busing with pick-up and drop-off points for students, elementary  classrooms, fenced-off play area, areas for basketball courts, ball fields, bike racks, shaded rest areas, turf play area, playgrounds, tetherball court area, and utilities.   

“The BLM facilitates opportunities for the development of educational facilities that help local communities grow,” said Gayle Marrs-Smith, Las Vegas Field Manager. “The action will increase educational opportunities for local and future residents.”

The Notice of Realty Action for a Recreation and Public Purposes (R&PP) Act Classification was published in yesterday’s Federal Register.  Interested parties may submit comments on whether the land is physically suited for the proposal, whether the use will maximize the future use or uses of the land, whether the use is consistent with local planning and zoning, or if the use is consistent with state and Federal programs.  Interested parties may also submit written comments regarding the specific use proposed in the application and plan of development, and whether the BLM followed proper administrative procedures in reaching the decision to lease and convey under the R&PP Act.

The 45-day public comment period will end November 26, 2018.  Written comments about the proposed R&PP lease should be mailed to: S. Quien May, Realty Specialist, Las Vegas Field Office, 4701 N.
