Las Vegas - The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Southern Nevada Office, invites public comment on a proposed Regulatory Energy Management facility located adjacent to Carpenter Canyon Road, east of State Route 160, near Pahrump. The comment period is open through November 11. A public meeting will be held on October 28 at 6 p.m. in the Pahrump Nugget Hotel and Casino Event Center, 681 South State Route 160. The meeting will focus on information about the proposed project to assist in electrical grid stability and energy management.

The proposed project is a 50 megawatt gravity based energy storage system that would be constructed on 72 acres of BLM managed public land. The system utilizes multiple electric locomotives operating on a single steep grade railroad track to store or deliver electric energy into the regional electrical grid - using electricity from the grid to power the locomotives uphill, returning that electricity to the grid as the locomotives descend with their motors operating as generators.

The environmental assessment is available at http://1.usa.gov/1k4UOJD . Please send your comments via e-mail to: ghelseth@blm.gov or to Greg Helseth, BLM SNDO, 4701 Torrey Pines Dr., Las Vegas, NV 89130 during the comment period.  For more information about this project, please contact Greg Helseth (BLM/Renewable Energy Coordination Office) at 702-515-5173.
