RENO, Nevada – The Bureau of Land Management Nevada State Office today issued an environmental assessment and sale notice for a competitive oil and gas lease sale in the third quarter.

The BLM-Nevada State Office intends to move forward with the Proposed Action, as analyzed in the environmental assessment (DOI-BLM-NV-L000-2023-0002-EA), by offering 4 parcels totaling 4,720.00 acres in the Ely District. The parcels will be offered at the online oil and gas lease sale scheduled for July 25, 2023; the sale can be accessed at www.energynet.com. The parcels may also be viewed on the EnergyNet website approximately 10 days after today’s posting of the Notice of Competitive Lease Sale on the BLM-Nevada oil and gas web page

The notice incorporates recommendations from the Department of the Interior’s 2021 Report on the Federal Oil and Gas Leasing Program, as well as other reports issued by the Governmental Accountability Office and Congressional Budget Office. All parcels that are leased as part of an oil and gas lease sale include appropriate protections and stipulations to protect natural and cultural resources.

As authorized under the Inflation Reduction Act, BLM will apply a 16.67% royalty rate for any new leases from this sale. More information about the Act is available on BLM's online fact sheet

Leasing is the first step in the process to develop federal oil and gas resources. Before development operations can begin, an operator must submit an application for permit to drill detailing development plans. The BLM reviews applications for permits to drill, posts them for public review, conducts an environmental analysis, and coordinates with state partners and stakeholders.

The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public land located primarily in 12 western states, including Alaska, on behalf of the American people. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation.
