ST. GEORGE, Utah — The Virgin River Campground in the BLM Arizona Strip Field Office area has gone 100% cashless for all campsites at this popular recreation area.

“For visitor convenience and to eliminate security issues related to handling and counting cash, we are going to a 100% cashless system through Recreation.gov at the Virgin River Campground,” said Randy Beckstrand, Arizona Strip Assistant Field Manager.

There are 18 multi-day camp sites on the upper loop that can be reserved in advance with online payment at https://www.recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/10086109. Visitors may camp up to 14 days at these sites. The upper loop also contains an additional 54 campsites that are available on a first-come, first-serve basis through the scan and pay feature of the recreation.gov mobile app for those who are looking for campsites while traveling through the area.

Seven sites are available for reservation in the lower loop that can also be reserved through the advanced online system through https://www.recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/10086109. The lower loop also contains another 30 campsites that are available on a first-come, first-serve basis through the scan and pay feature of the recreation.gov mobile app.

As long as the site has not been reserved, day use is also available at any site during daylight hours through the activity pass feature of the recreation.gov mobile app. The activity pass feature allows the public to enjoy day use of a site for family and group activities such as picnicking, hiking and scenic viewing.

Visitors will use the scan and pay system with a mobile device and debit or credit card. To use the scan and pay option on site, the BLM recommends visitors install the recreation.gov mobile app prior to their visit to avoid potential issues related to lack of cellular service.

Visitors to the Virgin River Canyon Campground enjoy amenities such as paved access, drinking water, flush toilets, and vehicle parking. Some campsites may also include pull through RV sites, grills, picnic tables and shade structures.

The Virgin River Canyon Recreation Area is in Mohave County, Arizona, within the Virgin River Gorge approximately 20 miles southwest of St. George, Utah. The area provides opportunities for camping, picnicking, nature and geology viewing, and hiking. It also provides recreational access to the Virgin River corridor, the Beaver Dam Mountains Wilderness and Paiute Wilderness. This scenic area, which is surrounded by colorful canyons and rugged cliffs, is a natural attraction for thousands of visitors every year due primarily to its location along the high traffic volume Interstate 15.
