The Bureau of Land Management, Carson City District, Stillwater Field Office has approved the Sand Mountain Recreation Area [SMRA] Campground Improvement and Maintenance project.

This action will enhance public access and safety by improving and maintaining the 50-acre primitive campground at SMRA. Improvements will include grading the camping area, redeveloping and signing camping area spur roads, creating transition aprons to the spur roads, expansion of the administrative use area including a medical helicopter landing pad and developing two “Learner Loop” riding areas. Periodic site maintenance will include repair/replacement of informational and directional signs and fencing and grading of the primary and spur roads. New disturbance will be limited to 0.5 acres between the staff parking area and the law enforcement storage area. The remainder of the work will occur within the existing camp area.

The estimated construction time is two weeks and construction would take place during periods of low visitor use.
