UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIORBUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENTWASHINGTON, D.C. 20240http://www.blm.govOctober 10, 2014In Reply Refer To:1115 (420) PEMS TRANSMISSION 10/14/2014Information Bulletin No. 2015-001                     To:                   All Washington Office and Field Office OfficialsAttn:  Education, Interpretation, National Landscape Conservation System, and Outreach LeadsFrom:               Assistant Director, National Landscape Conservation System and Community PartnershipsSubject:           Availability of Bureau of Land Management’s 2013 Artist-in-Residence Poster, “Sleeping Ute Awakes”The Division of Education, Interpretation, and Partnerships (WO-420) is pleased to announce the availability of the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) 2013 Artist-in-Residence poster featuring ”Sleeping Ute Awakes,” an acrylic painting by artist Lewis Williams (image attached).  One of two 2013 artists in residence at Colorado’s Canyons of the Ancients National Monument, Williams explained his approach as follows: "I learned the power of wilderness.  I am drawn to elements in nature that struggle against other elements, as archetypes of resilience, with a sanctity in being just what they are made to be.” Williams chose a unique portrayal of the monument’s skyline to highlight the landscape.Each year, the BLM celebrates its public lands with a poster showcasing the work of one artist from among that year’s artists in residence.  The Artist-in-Residence program, which features the tagline “Taking Public Lands to Heart,” is intended to expand public perceptions of the BLM and our National Conservation Lands.  The program promotes awareness of the exceptional places on the public lands and provides an opportunity for learning and dialogue about the value of preserving unique landscapes.  Artists typically conduct public presentations during their residencies, often followed by exhibitions of their art in other locations.  The BLM Artist-in-Residence web page features images of previous art and posters as well as information about the program.In 2014, nine BLM offices and sites in six states hosted Artist-in-Residence programs, and more are expected in 2015.  A toolkit and additional information can be found on the WO-420 intranet site.  For assistance with initiating an Artist-in-Residence program in your area, please contact BLM Education Program Lead Megg Heath at (970) 882-6855 or mheath@blm.gov.   Several copies of the 2013 Artist-in-Residence poster will be sent to each BLM State Office, District Office and visitor center for display.  For additional copies of the 2013 poster or copies of the 2012 poster, please contact the BLM’s Printed Materials Distribution Services at (303) 236-1975 or BLM_OC_PMDS@blm.gov.Signed by:                                                                   Authenticated by:Carl Rountree                                                             Robert M.
