Sept. 28: Upper Log Canyon Wildlife Water Access Rehab

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Socorro Field Office is celebrating National Public Lands Day by rehabbing a closed logging road which was utilized to provide utility task vehicle (UTV)access to construct the Upper Log Canyon Wildlife Water in June 2024.

Rehabbing will include placing rocks, logs, etc. on the road; cutting small diameter trees and placing on road; and raking out of UTV tracks. The goal is to work the entire length of the temporary access road.  For those that feel that they can not make the complete hike, no worries, as the project will be designed so that everyone can participate. There will be plenty of work from the start of the road to the end at the water site, so you can go as far as feel comfortable going.   The possibility for rain is usually high that time of year, so plan to get rained on and plan accordingly.        

The plan is to meet at the BLM Socorro Field Office to sign volunteer agreements, conduct a safety briefing, and get the car pool situation to the project site figured out. There may be sufficient government vehicles to meet car pool needs, but if not you may be asked to drive your personal vehicle to the site. There is an approximate 2 hour drive from Socorro to the project parking and hike in point.    

There is an approximate 1.50 mile hike up a canyon bottom to the wildlife water location where we hope to make with the rehab work.
